Athena Collections leverages technology, trust and transparency to solve late payment issues for business clients while preserving relationships.

Debt recovery is an awkward topic in business, but it’s essential to business survival.

According to the Department for Business & Trade, late payments, including overdue invoices, cost the UK economy nearly £11 billion per year and lead to the closure of 38 UK businesses per day – a terrifying statistic for SMEs, which account for over 99% of UK enterprises.

One SME owner tackling the late payments problem head-on is Andrew Athineos, founder of Athena Collections, a commercial debt collection agency which provides businesses with superior debt recovery solutions. “I saw first-hand how many SMEs were being let down by other debt collection agencies, including slow processes, poor communication and a court system that feels stuck in the past,” Athineos explains.

“I started Athena Collections to be a modern, human approach to debt recovery that blends compliance, firm negotiation and proper customer service,” he adds.

Since Athineos founded Athena Collections in 2017, the firm has gained a presence both nationally and internationally, with over 100+ five-star Google reviews. It operates on a ‘no collection no commission’ basis, a move which has established trust with its clients. “We’ve built a reputation for being transparent, ethical and incredibly effective,” he explains.

The trust factor

Athineos acknowledges that the debt recovery market is saturated, but believes he has helped his firm stand out by building a trustworthy reputation. “Trust is everything in debt recovery, so I focused on delivering great results, being transparent with fees, and communicating better than anyone else.” This level of reputation meant that early clients became ambassadors for Athena Collections: “That built our foundation.”

The firm’s solid reputation is seen in its consistent growth year-on-year, with cases ranging from £100 to over £8 million in value. Clearly, being trustworthy and transparent works.

A different approach to debt collection

Through a combination of automation and personal contact, Athena Collections offers clients quick updates while treating debtors “fairly.” This means it can help businesses recover overdue invoices without damaging relationships, helping businesses retain customers and stabilise cash flow. This phased business model, which prioritises soft engagement and early resolution, stands out from the old-school debt collection agency approach, explains Athineos. “We don’t hide behind jargon, we don’t charge pointless fees, and we don’t rely on the outdated scattergun approach that many agencies still use.” However, the firm takes a tougher approach if issues intensify, such as when disputed debts or litigation matters arise.

Future plans and current success

The next year will see Athena Collections enhance its various service operations, including its automation capabilities and litigation arm, and will integrate AI tools for faster client insight and onboarding. In all, it looks like a year of building upon an already strong service.

Success, for Athineos, is easy to define, as his firm has already achieved a lot of it. “For me, it’s simple,” he says. “My clients get paid, and my team enjoys the environment they work in. I’m also proud of our repeat referral rate, and the fact that we’ve grown steadily every year without external investment.”

What runs through Athena Collections is a strong and disruptive mission statement, namely that debt collection doesn’t need to be “aggressive or old-fashioned and can be firm, fair and results-driven.”

With the firm’s solid annual growth, strong client referral rate and high Google Reviews, it sounds like Athineos was, and is, onto something…
