Name: John Cheney
Age: 40 years young
Company: Workbooks.com
First job: Collecting glasses in my parents’ pub
Dream job: Dark chocolate tester at Greens and Blacks
Car: Jaguar XKR
Economy, business or first class: Business if I can afford it!
Most extravagant purchase: Diamond earrings for my wife’s 40th. I’m still using the brownie points.
Most-played song on your iPod: “Sing while you’re swinging” by Robbie Williams. A great modern take on classic songs.
Best business book: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It tells you success is all about hard work, the right environment and a lot of luck!
Worst business moment: Watching the share price of the company I’d just sold my business to (for stock) crash by 95 per cent.
Proudest business moment: Taking my daughters into the office and them understanding that what I did helped all the staff to get paid and in turn, look after their families.
Your business mentor: My Dad. He always got up a 6am every day to start cooking the pub food and finished at midnight each night. The bar was always clean, the food was good and he always made customers feel welcome. Great service and hard work is what it’s all about.
